Kaley Crawford-Flett
Kaley Crawford-Flett is studying for a master of Applied Science in geotechnical engineering with particular emphasis the materials used in large earth dams and internal stability problems associated with the type of materials used in British Columbia which have many similarities to New Zealand. She sees this as an important study related to New Zealand for both existing earth dams and dams likely to be built in the future. Kaley graduated BE (Civil) with First Class Honours from Canterbury University in 2007. She had developed a keen interest in dams after with Riley Consultants during her study and after graduation. Kaley has been the recipient of many awards, not only for her academic excellence but also for her sporting and cultural achievements. She has considerable success in triathlons and has coached and umpired hockey. Kaley has achieved distinction in the Royal School of Music grades 4 and 5 music theory, while playing in orchestras, bands and chamber music groups.
Tim Taylor
Tim Taylor is studying at Lund University in Sweden for a Masters degree in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science. Tim’s passion is the daunting challenge of transitioning to sustainable societies, and the blend of social change that must support technological innovation to make this possible. He sees the need for the engineering profession to make a significant contribution to such a transition, and the course he is taking part in is leading the world in the new trans-disciplinary field of Sustainability Science. Tim graduated BE (Civil) with Second Class Honours in 2002 and was the recipient of many academic awards. As a register of Engineers for Disaster Relief member he was assigned to manage housing and infrastructure reconstruction in the Maldives after the 2004 Tsunami, achieving effective coordination between government ministries, contractors, donors and beneficiaries. This was followed by a later request from the Maldives government to assist in preparing a plan for the planning and coordination of future infrastructure projects. Tim worked with Octa Associates in Christchurch on windfarm feasibility studies and other construction projects.
